Professor Noel Alpins AM
WHY CHOOSE US?
Cataract and refractive Surgeon
Professor Alpins has been practising cataract surgery and refractive surgery since founding NewVision Clinics in the 1990’s. He is nationally and internationally recognised as a leading cataract and refractive surgeon and a leading world authority on myopia and astigmatism treatment with the excimer laser.
Experience
Professor Alpins began performing refractive surgery in 1985 introducing the technique of radial keratotomy at that time, and was one of the first surgeons in Australia to use the Laser Vision correction techniques. Since 1991, he has treated over 20,000 patients with the Excimer laser.
He has invented new methods for treating and analysing astigmatism which includes Vector Planning™, and has developed the ASSORT surgical planning outcomes analysis software program that is used by ophthalmologists in Australia and overseas. He speaks widely on these topics at national and international meetings and has been a keynote speaker and chair on many occasions. In 2010, he was the invited Council Lecturer at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College.
Internationally recognised as a leading cataract and refractive surgeon and a leading world authority on myopia and astigmatism treatment with the excimer laser.
Research
Professor Alpins is on the editorial board of many prestigious publications, including the American and European Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Ocular Surgery News, Eurotimes and others. He regularly contributes articles to scientific journals and ophthalmic information magazines on cataract and laser, astigmatism and myopia surgery.
His research paper ‘Clinical outcomes of laser in situ keratomileusis using combined topography and refractive wavefront treatments for myopic astigmatism’ published in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery demonstrated the benefits of vector planning on visual outcomes compared with current available treatments. His latest research paper ‘A new method of quantifying corneal topographic astigmatism (CorT) that corresponds with manifest refractive cylinder’ was also published in JCRS. This paper demonstrates that CorT total describes corneal astigmatism more accurately than Simulated Keratometry values.
ASSORT Software
Developed by Prof. Noel Alpins
The Alpins Method of astigmatism analysis used in refractive , corneal and cataract surgery is programmed into the ASSORT software. The Alpins Method forms the basis for astigmatism analysis methodology published by the American National Standards Institute and is the standard adopted by the Journal of Refractive Surgery for analysing and reporting astigmatism results.
World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences (WCRSVS)
Prof. Alpins has recently become a Founder, Trustee and Governor of the World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences (WCRSVS). The WCRSVS serves as the guardian of standards, quality and training for refractive surgery ensuring safety and current and future demands. Almost 2 billion people live with visual impairment due to refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism) and cataracts.
